2003 Triumph Bonneville T100

2003 Triumph Bonneville T100 in Sapphire Blue

If ever a model epitomised the true core of traditional motorcycling, it’s surely the Bonneville. Now Triumph has added another layer to the basic experience with a fully-equipped road-burner in the racy style of the sixties speedster – the T100.

Built on the timeless lines of the Bonneville, but sporting the twin top-yoke-mounted instruments that true traditionalists crave, the T100 also features rubber knee-grips on a two-tone finished fuel tank. To add that extra dimension of unashamed extravagance, the engine covers are finished in lustrous chrome for a modern take on that full-on cafι-racer flavour.

Powered by the same specification engine as the more basic Bonneville and running the same sweet-handling chassis, the T100 expands the massively popular Triumph twin range yet further and adds another distinctive styling option for the discerning rider. Beyond that, the T100, in Goodwood Green with Gold infill, or in classic Sapphire Blue with White infill and Red coachline, ensures another great model from Triumph’s illustrious ‘ton-up’ past rides again in style.

The Bonneville is perhaps the very essence to many people of what motorcycling is about – a relatively simple machine but one that provides maximum rider enjoyment and involvement. However some want a little more than the basic package and for this reason, and with a further nod to the past, the T100 (so called in honour of the legendary ’60s speedster) exists for those that want that little bit extra.

The T100 is based around the Bonneville package and uses the same throaty twin-cylinder engine and sure-footed chassis. But the T100, with its tachometer, rubber knee grips on the tank and chromed engine covers, is the very essence of style and individuality just as it was 40 years’ ago. All of the T100’s crisp coach lines are hand-painted as they were back then.

The supremely elegant two-tone black and white paint scheme is new for 2004 and provides a striking yet subtle alternative to the existing, stylish Goodwood Green / Aztec Gold or Sapphire Blue / White options.

While fashions may come and go some things remain constant. The timeless T100 proudly does just that.

Adding subtle touches to the uncluttered Bonneville form, the T100 roadster, with its tachometer, rubber knee grips and chromed engine covers wears a little extra to mark its connection with the classic speedster of the sixties. And it has a little extra spice now, too…

The extra bite comes from the full-blooded, 865cc, air-cooled, parallel twin-cylinder engine now powering the T100. Delivering throaty performance – echoed by the mellow backbeat from its twin pea-shooter exhaust pipes – a bore and stroke of 90 x 68mm, compression ratio of 9.2:1 and 360° firing interval add up to a responsive, punchy and soulful power unit.

The T100’s chassis thrives on the extra power and torque available from the engine delivering secure road-holding, effortless steering and easy-going manners – as you’d expect of a motorcycle drawn from Bonneville stock. The tubular steel frame, 41mm telescopic forks and chromed twin rear shocks easily cope with the extra performance the engine imparts, as do the powerful twin-piston calipers operating on the front and rear discs.

Today the T100 is the very essence of style and individuality, just as it was 40 years ago. All of the T100’s crisp coach lines are hand-applied – as they were back then – and new for 2005 is the supremely elegant two-tone Opal White with Tangerine infill paint scheme, which provides a striking alternative to the stunning Jet Black with White infill.

The Bonneville T100 remains a timeless machine – a pleasure to ride, to own. It’s a machine with a unique character that defies comparison. It’s an individual motorcycle and individual choice.

2008 Triumph Bonneville T100

2008 Triumph Bonneville T100 in Jet Black & Tornado Red

Adding subtle touches to the uncluttered Bonneville form, the T100 wears a little extra to mark its connection with the classic ‘deluxe’ speedster of the sixties. The tank with hand painted coach lines and chromed engine covers are just a couple of features that add to the T100’s overall elegant presence. It gracefully tackles traffic and finds jaunts to the countryside irresistible, while remaining the very epitome of sophistication and style.

The T100’s full-blooded and responsive 865cc parallel twin-cylinder engine delivers throaty acceleration, amplified by the mellow backbeat from its twin peashooter exhaust pipes. Maximum power of 68PS (67bhp) arrives at 7500rpm, with peak torque of 69Nm (51ft.lbf) delivered at 5800rpm.

For 2008 the T100 is updated with a new fuel injection system to meet forthcoming Euro 3 legislation. Cleaner running than a carburettor engine, the fuel injected engine is also easier to fire up from a cold start and runs more smoothly when cold. The cool retro styling remains uncompromised though, as the fuel injectors are cleverly concealed by throttle bodies designed to look like carburettors.

The T100 features a classically styled dual coloured tank, with hand painted coach lines, rubber knee pads and ‘60’s inspired chromed tank badges. A pair of chromed stainless peashooter-style silencers handle the exhaust gases and enhance the traditional appearance of the bike.

The braking set-up of single front 310mm disc and 255mm rear, both worked on by powerful twin-piston calipers offers sensitivity, control and ample stopping power. The chassis is a tubular steel frame, 41mm telescopic forks and chromed twin rear shocks – offers secure road-holding, effortless steering and easy-going manners, just as you would expect of a bike derived from Bonneville hereditary. It’s topped by a generous seat, with plenty of room for two and an elegantly embossed Triumph logo.
