I recently got back into motorcycling after a 30 year absence. A 2013 Bonneville Mag wheel with 1,600 miles showed up on FB Marketplace just 20 miles away. Garage kept -2 owner- shoulder issues forced the sale. I test drove it and bought it. My last previous ride was a HD Ultra in 2024. The Bonneville was a lot lighter but the acceleration was a bit disappointing. Low speed throttle response was "Snatchy". Once at speed, It was ok. What to do?
Clean bike, great price, I plan on keeping it so it was time to invest in improvements. After new tires and rear shocks I looked at the Phase I torque mods including new silencers. I am ok with a wrench but not real tech savy, electronics do not like me.

I removed the SAI and O2 systems, pulled out the air box baffle, installed the free flow filter and bell mouth, all purchased from Ultimate Twin Power. The most difficult part of that was removing the old sealant from the airbox cover. Installed new Norman Hyde peashooter silencers. I also installed the safe start boss reinforcing purchased from UTP while I was messing around with the other mods.

Then came the scary part, re-flashing the ECU with a TTP Tune 3. Turns out the most difficult part here was finding a laptop with windows 10 or earlier. Dug around in the basement and found an old Compaq with windows 7. Even more nervous now, windows updates are a pain and sometimes unpredictable.

Got the laptop sorted out and then downloaded the driver off of TTP site. Purchased the OBD reader and cable from UTP so I know it was per recommendations.

Hooked up the laptop to the bike and started to load the new tune. I followed the instructions to the letter. Easy-peasy, no problem. 20 minutes later ready to ride. I thought I should buy a lottery ticket, this was too easy.

Well let me tell you, the ride was almost unbelievable. The improvement in the throttle response from idle was phenomenal. There were no glitches or snatchiness, it was just smooth.

The thing that put the biggest smile on my face wasread more the torque, especially the low end. TTP has measured an almost 20% increase in torque compared to factory and it is constant through all the rpm's. Let me tell you, this bike now pulls like a freight train. It is completely different from the stock set up and so much better. For you OG guys, I had a 1968 750 Norton that I rebuilt with oversized pistons. That bike had torque. My Bonney reminds of the Norton, but without the vibration.

So, I have about $1,300 or so invested in the mods that it took to get to this point. The improvement in throttle response and torque are worth every cent. It is impossible to over recommend this mod.

I have a 19T front sprocket which will be installed next. With all the added torque, I run out of gears too quickly. After that, the front shocks will get an upgrade.

In the meantime, I plan on getting some rides in.
